Roman provincial coinage (30 BC to 294 AD)

Please be aware that the distinction between provincial and general Roman coinage is often ambiguous. For clarity, I have chosen to classify only coins minted by individual cities and client kingdoms, which do not adhere to denominations used across the empire, as provincial coinage. Thus, coins minted in the provinces, yet regarded in the literature as having a general denomination, will be considered general Roman coins and displayed in the imperial category on this website.
Equally arbitrarily, I have listed Judean coins in a separate Oriental category.

It's worth noting that our knowledge of provincial coinage is quite limited. The names of most coins remain unknown, especially those minted from copper and bronze. Little is known about their mutual relations or their exchange rates against Imperial coinage. For this reason, numismatists often refer to these coins as "AE" (or Æ) followed by a number indicating the coin's most common approximate diameter in millimeters. It's not uncommon for a collector to for example possess an AE 22 coin with an actual diameter of 20 or 24 mm.

Additionally, such overlapping representations of heads are called "jugate" in numismatics, from the Latin "iugatus" meaning "joined".
